President Bush Speaks Out On Mine Disaster

President Bush says the nation is mourning those who lost their lives in the West Virginia coal mine disaster.

He says Americans send their prayers and condolences to the families whose hearts he says "are broken."

On a visit to the Pentagon, the president told reporters, "We ask that the good Lord comfort them in their time of need."

Bush praised West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin -- and rescue workers who he said "risked their lives" for those trapped underground.

Meantime, the administration's vowing a full investigation of the Monday explosion.

Labor Secretary Elaine Chao says federal officials will determine the cause -- and ensure there's no repeat. White House spokesman Scott McClellan defends the Bush record on mine safety, saying it's been a top administration priority.
