Harrison County Wildfire Blamed On Fireworks

Fireworks may have been the cause of a blaze in the Harrison County. Fire crews were called around 11 Monday morning to a brush fire on Simmons Road near FM 450. Crews from Harleton and west Harrison County were called in to douse the blaze, which torched about 10 acres of a hay meadow within a matter of minutes.

An area landowner told investigators that minutes before the fire started he heard the sound of fireworks going off in the area. Firefighters worked quickly to knock down hot spots and douse the blaze before it could spread to nearby homes.

"With the wind like it is today low humidity got into that hay meadow and we were fortunate enough to be be here just in time it got into that and stop it there, but if it would have got a good start there it would have been a problem" said Harleton volunteer firefighter Mike Brittain.

There were no injuries, and the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
