New Orleans' Top Cop Says Shooting Appeared Justified

New Orleans police say officers who shot and killed a knife-wielding man on Monday fired nine times after the man tried to stab a lieutenant.

Police Superintendent Warren Riley says he doesn't have an autopsy report for Anthony Hayes, so he does not know how many bullets hit the victim.

Riley says the incident began after Hayes punched a clerk or manager at a drug store.

He says when two officers arrived, Hayes became aggressive and pulled a knife, prompting 16 more officers to come and help.

Riley says patrol officers don't carry stun guns or beanbag guns, and there was no time to bring in a SWAT team.

Hayes is also said to have a long arrest record, but Riley would not elaborate.
