7 On Your Side: Shipping And Handling Fees

Shannon Foster of Longview is redecorating her game room. She found what she was looking for in a $210 Santa Fe Bar piece on Target.com.
"It would match the TV stand," says Shannon. It wasn't until the piece arrived to her home when Shannon realized the shipping and handling fee was $309.99, bringing this $210 item to a grand total of over $560. "I was like holy cow this has to be a mistake!," exclaims Shannon. "That's when I called [KLTV 7] to see if there was something that could be done."
7 On Your Side did call Target who says the $309.99 fee is correct. On Target's website is what's called a "special distance fee" and the Longview zip code 75605 falls under it. So an extra $250 is added to the initial $59.99 shipping and handling charge.
But Shannon says, "There's a whole line of that furniture and they're all big and heavy and that's the only one that is that expensive to ship." Shannon returned the Santa Fe Bar and it took several phone calls and emails to Target to get the company to refund her money. They did, in full. Shannon says she would much rather be stuck looking for another piece of furniture, than be stuck with a $562 bill. "People should know and be aware to look closer before you click that final button," Shannon says.
Other East Texas zip codes like Tyler's and Jacksonville's fall under this special distance fee charge. If your zip code begins with 754xx through 759xx and you order an oversized item from target.com, you could be charged much extra for shipping.
