Smith And Van Zandt County Fires

Multiple fires in Van Zandt County kept firefighters busy Monday afternoon. A fire off County Road 4603 was the largest in the county on Monday. It destroyed dozens of acres. Nine fire trucks and more than 35 firefighters worked to contain it. Russell Kuhns, Assistant Fire Chief of Brownsboro Fire Department says, "We have ran out of folks.  We don't even have forestry units responding.  They are all tied up somewhere else." Fire officials say they are still unsure on what started the fire.

It was a busy morning for fire crews in Whitehouse. We're told 20 to 25 acres of land were destroyed in a grass fire. Authorities say it started when a nearby resident began burning books. Firefighters say the wind caused the fire to spread, putting some nearby homes in danger. The Smith County Assistant Fire Marshal says the man who started the fire was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. No word yet if any charges will be filed.

Just north of that fire, also in Smith County, a trash fire got out of control off FM 757, just north of Highway 31. Fire marshals say the fire spread into a nearby fiel, quickly catching 14 bails of hay and 10 acres on fire. Volunteer fire departments from Jackson and Chapel Hill worked to put out the blaze.
