Public Garden Honors Lady Bird Johnson

A new garden under construction in East Texas will honor former first lady, Lady Bird Johnson. The announcement was made today, on the west lawn of the historic Hotel Marshall located downtown. That's the garden's proposed location.

The public garden will include native plants and wildflowers. Lady Bird Johnson was born in Karnack in Harrison County.

With the news, Johnson said, "What an honor it is to have the garden at the historic Hotel Marshall named for me! Growing up in East Texas, I knew where the first wild violets bloomed and looked for the Dogwood-those white blossoms like stars spangling the bare woods-and all the varieties that made by spirits soar! I'm so grateful to be a part of this Harrison County landmark, and I think of no better setting for a lovely garden in which to reflect on nature's bounty!"
