Bullard Student Collapses And Dies

The East Texas student that collapsed and died at a freshman basketball game tonight may have suffered from cardiac arrest. That's what the superintendent of Bullard ISD told us tonight. He said 16 year old sophomore Larry Prentice had an irregular heartbeat.

Larry Prentice was standing at the free throw line, during a game against Hudson, when he fell to the ground. We've been told he did not have a pulse and was not breathing.

Although CPR was performed, and he was immediately taken to Woodland Heights Hospital in nearby Lufkin, they were never able to revive him.

Tonight, the basketball team returned home to Bullard without one of their teammates. The superintendent says the coaches and players are all devastated.

"Our coaches are taking it very hard. Bullard is a very unique community. We're a small school, 3-A, and all of our kids are very tight knit. They know each other very well, and we kind of all consider ourselves a big family in Bullard. You know, when we lose one, it's very, very difficult to deal with," Superintendent Jim Wright said.

The school had ministers on hand when the team returned. Tomorrow, they'll put a plan in place if more grief counseling is needed.

The superintendent told us Larry Prentice was a very popular young man who was a good student leader on campus, and he will be missed.
