More Than 800 Texas Schools Make List Allowing Students To Transfer Out

The number of low-rated schools in Texas has almost doubled year to year, giving more than a half million students the right to transfer to better schools.

The Texas Education Agency has released its list of 821 campuses where students have under performed two out of the last three years on any of five core academic subject. The list also includes schools rated "academically unacceptable" in 2004 or 2005. Once a school receives the "academically unacceptable" rating, it remains on this list for three years, even if they've improved their rating.

These are the East Texas schools we were able to identify on the list: Arp Junior High, Chapel Hill Junior High in Mt. Pleasant and Gladewater High School. There are two schools in Longview ISD: McClure Elementary and Pinewood Park Elementary. Also on the list, Murchison Elementary and New Summerfield School. And there are 6 schools listed from Tyler ISD: Douglas, Griffin, Peete and Austin elementaries, as well as Stewart Middle School and John Tyler High School.

The transfer option will be available for students in these schools for the 2006 school year.
