Chicago Bears Coach Supporting His Old Team

It's been 30 years since Lovie Smith stalked East Texas football fields as the star linebacker for the undefeated, three-time defending state champion Big Sandy Wildcats.  But the head coach of the Chicago Bears is still keeping a close eye on his former team as they prepare for their first state championship game since his senior season.

A Chicago TV reporter asked Smith at a post practice press conference if he has been following the Wildcats exploits.

"You know I have been," he replied.  "Of course, we're in the state championship game.  It's the 30 year anniversary of our last state championship, which I was a part of, of course.  No, we are in that, and I couldn't be happier for them."

When asked if he had any words of wisdom for his old school, he said No.

"They're just tired of hearing about what we did back in the day," Smith said.  "They're ready to make a name for themselves and hopefull they can."

Maybe not completely aware of what Texas footbal is all about, the reporter commented that "this has to be a big deal down there."

"Big deal," Smith said simply.  "Big deal to say the least."

The 9-4 Bears are the surprise success story in the NFC, and are preparing to host the Atlanta Falcons Sunday night.  But you can't blame Lovie Smith if he's a little distracted for a few hours Saturday afternoon.
