7 On Your Side: Opt-Out Update

We told you about a phone number you could call to stop receiving unsolicited "pre-approved" letters. It was 1-888-5-OPT-OUT or you can do it online at www.optoutprescreen.com. Many of you called, disturbed that you still had to submit your social security number and date of birth to process the request. So we called the Federal Trade Commission for you to ask why, especially when consumers are constantly told never to give personal information over the phone or on the web. "They need the information in order to verify who the consumer is so that they opt-out the correct consumer. And the personal information will only be used to process the request," says Katherine Armstrong, Attorney in the Division of Financial Affairs for the Federal Trade Commission. Armstrong also says in general, consumers still should be careful who they share their personal information with.

The FTC says the opt-out phone number and website are run by the major consumer reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian, Innovis and Trans Union.
