Teens Seriously Injured In Collision; Officials Say Alcohol May Be a Factor

A head-on collision leaves four East Texas teens seriously injured. Officials believe alcohol was involved. It happened early Sunday on Highway 271 and Bear Road. That's about two miles north of Gilmer in Upshur County.

Four teens, ages 16 to 18, were riding in a Jeep Cherokee when officials say it slammed into an oncoming Geo Tracker. A liquor bottle was found in the Jeep. Injuries to the three boys inside the Cherokee include a broken leg, broken nose and a concussion. The girl with them had a broken neck and is in a drug-induced coma.

"It appears the cause of the accident is going to be the crossing of the center stripe into oncoming traffic. We do have reason to believe that alcohol maybe a factor," Upshur County DPS Trooper Chris Callaway.

The four teens are students at Harmony High School. The principal tells KLTV 7 their classmates are shook up about the news. The driver of the other car is also in the hospital. Officials are still trying to determine his identity.
