Justices Reject Williams' Appeal

The California Supreme Court has refused to grant a stay of execution for convicted killer Stanley "Tookie" Williams.

The state's high court ruled six-to-zero against staying the execution, saying Williams' last-minute appeal lacked merit and was untimely. The decision means Williams will be executed early tomorrow unless Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger grants clemency or a last-ditch federal appeal succeeds.

Williams' supporters have made another pitch to save his life, telling Schwarzenegger's staff that they have a new witness who could help prove Williams' innocence.

Williams, who is 51, co-founded the Crips gang. He was condemned to death for the murder of a man during a robbery in February 1979 and the slayings of a couple and their daughter at a South Los Angeles motel the following month.
