Spring Hill I.S.D. Superintendent Retires

A longtime East Texas school superintendent officially stepped down. Hundreds turned out at the Spring Hill High School library today to say their goodbyes , and heart-felt thank yous to retiring superintendent Mike Crossland.

"I wouldn't have missed this for anything. You know, Mike Crossland has kind of been like and institution around the Spring Hill community, great man, great educator," said Longview Mayor Jay Dean.

Crossland spent 40 years in education, as a teacher , a football coach, administrator, and superintendent. And one after another, people came in to say job well done and pass on their own form of thank you.  "I'm overwhelmed by the turnout today. Old friends, new friends, staff members... I'm just overwhelmed with all this," said Crossland.

He was given a surprise treat as Mayor Dean proclaimed December 11th 2005 as Mike Crossland Day. State representative Tommy Merritt honored Crossland with an official resolution of recognition from the State House of Representatives. He spent 20 years at White Oak schools and 20 years at Spring Hill and Crossland says he wouldn't change anything.  "As you look back there were things that in hindsight I would probably do different but the overall career no! I would continue. If starting over, I would teach, and coach and go into administration exactly the way I did," Crossland said.

More than 300 people attended the retirement party for Crossland.
