Sliding Plane Kills Child In Car

A Southwest Airlines jetliner trying to land in heavy snow slid off a Chicago runway, crashed through a fence and slid into a busy street.

It hit one vehicle and pinned another beneath it, killing a six-year-old boy. He was in the car with his two younger brothers, including an infant, and his parents.

Authorities say at least ten people were injured. Eight people of the injured were on the ground. An Aviation Department spokeswoman says two passengers on the plane suffered minor injuries. Southwest Airlines Flight 12-48 from Baltimore was landing at Midway International Airport with 98 passengers and five crew last night when it slid through the fence.

The airport area had seven inches of snow, but the Aviation Department spokeswoman says runway conditions at the time were acceptable.

Southwest is based in Dallas.
