Saddam Defense Walks Out

Saddam Hussein's trial is proceeding with fits and starts. The Iraqi court reversed itself today, allowing former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark and another lawyer to speak on the court's legitimacy and safety of lawyers.

The chief judge had blocked them from speaking, prompting a walkout by the defense team. Then, the judge appointed new defense lawyers and called a recess. After the break, the judge let Clark and the other lawyer speak.

Clark told the court "reconciliation is essential." He says unless Iraqis see the trial as fair, "It will divide rather than reconcile Iraq." The judge then told Clark he's only supposed to talk about security guarantees for defense lawyers.

Two lawyers been assassinated since the trial started in October. Clark called security measures "absurd."
