Lufkin earned a state semifinal berth for the third time in the last four years, beating Copperas Cove tonight 38-28. The Panthers jumped out to a 14-0 lead and led 21-14 at the half. Lufkin would extend their lead to 28-14 in the third, but Copperas Cove scored two straight touchdowns to tie it at 28-28 with 10:38 left in the game. The Panthers then shut the Bulldogs down, scoring the games final 10 points to win the game. They now await Saturdays winner between 13-0 Southlake Carroll and 13-0 Plano.
Canton and Tatum proved to be quite a battle in the 3A quarterfinals at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium. Tatum looked like they would run away with it, jumping out to a quick 14-0 lead. But Canton Quarterback G-J Kinne brings the Eagles right back, with back-to-back touchdowns to Casey Bell and Houston Tuminello to tie it. Tatum would go back up by 10 into the third. Cassius Pollard would throw a late second quarter TD pass to Daylon McCoy. Tatum would hold a 10 point halftime lead. A Kinne touchdown pass to Michael prox early in the third brought Canton back within three, but that's as close as they would get. Tatum's Lennon Creer had 28 carries for 204 yards, including a punishing touchdown run late in the 4th. Tatum ends Canton's magical season with the 45-21 win. So after a heartbreaking loss to eventual state champ Gilmer in last years quarterfinals, Tatum gets over the hump to move on to the semifinals to play Sweetwater.
Big Sandy finds themselves in the state semifinals for the second straight season. They beat Iola tonight 46-8 at Bruce Field in Athens. The Wildcats have outscored their opponents in the playoffs 202-34! They move on to face 13-1 Bremond next week in the semifinals.
