Rice Makes Unannounced Visit To Iraq

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has made a surprise detour to Iraq. She's added an unannounced stop in Mosul to her Middle East trip.

The city in northern Iraq is predominantly Sunni. They are a minority in Iraq and have largely opposed U.S. democracy plans. Rice is appealing to them to cooperate in next month's legislative elections.

She told reporters traveling with her she wants to "talk about the importance of reaching across sectarian lines." Rice flew into a military airport, and on the helicopter ride to a U.S. base, got a look at bombed-out buildings below. S

he'll be meeting with the local governor and getting a look at new rapid-response teams, designed to get into pacified areas quickly and go to work establishing order and rebuilding.
