UT Tyler Announces Restructuring Of Theater Program
The theater program at UT Tyler is being restructured. After suspending its theater major in 2003, the school now says it is also suspending its theater minor. UT Tyler officials say the program could reopen in two to three years after a faculty committee evaluates different factors.
"Because of resources, because of time demands, we need to be able to suspend production and some of the teachings so that our faculty will be able to develop new programs so that we can come forward with a new program," said Richard Osburn, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at UT Tyler.
One student says he and others on campus are extremely disappointed with the decision. "What they're doing is trying to save a buck and the theater is the disposable program," said Eric Newell, a senior speech communications major.
Students currently majoring and minoring in theater will be allowed to finish their programs. The school says the theater will most likely house a new cafeteria.
