Benefit Chili Cook Off Held In Kilgore

An event that has become enormous over the years was held in Kilgore today celebrating the art of making chili. 59 companies entered this year's Texas Oilmens' Chili Cook-Off, and a big crowd jammed the streets of the worlds richest acre to get a taste.

"To make good chili you just got to know what you're doing a lot of people out here don't know what their doing but we do, we know what we're doing" said chili cook Steve Harrison.

For every entry there was a theme, Hawaiian chili, gypsy chili, even bubba chili. For some it was a first time experience.

"Well i was amazed at how strong it was it makes me sweat a little bit" said Norweigian visitor Ingar Tamgem-Odland.

"You don't want a hot chili, over the years the hotter the chili the more people complain about it than enjoy it" said chili cook Ken Laird.

All the cooks have their own secret to chili perfection. "the secret to making good chili is hiding your road kill in it" joked chili cook Jason Harrison, who was competing against his father Steve.

All proceeds from the 13th annual event go to the Kilgore crisis center.
