Two U.S. Pilots Killed In Helicopter Crash

The Marine statement did not say why the attack helicopter, commonly used as air support and escort for ground troops, went down.

"The incident occurred while the two-man crew was flying in support of security and stabilization operations," according to the news release. Ramadi, the capital of the Anbar province, is about 70 miles west of Baghdad.

The Marines recently increased the number of troops in the Sunni Arab-dominated province. Since the war began in March 2003, 2,029 U.S. service members have died in Iraq.
