A group of business leaders presented two possible options for the future site of the Smith County Jail. The Master Plan Resource Committee was formed to come up with a plan to keep the jail downtown. Today, a group of architects working with the group presented two conceptual designs. Option East would place the facility between the railroad tracks and Center Ave. Option South would place the building between College Avenue and the railroad tracks.
Members of the Smith County Jail Site Selection Committee, including Smith County Sheriff, J.B. Smith, were on hand for the presentation. Smith says the group did a great job at taking into account future expansion. "I want to make sure that five and ten years from now we're not in the same trouble we're in today of not having enough bed space for prisoners. It's very expensive to build more five years from now than it is today," said Smith.
The price tag of Option East is estimated at more than $70.7 million. Option South is expected to cost $58.75 million.
