Union Grove Man Murdered At Home

The small community of Union Grove in Upshur County is reeling from the mysterious killing of a resident, with no apparent motive, other than robbery. The murder of a Union Grove man who lived on a private dirt road off Highway 271 has locals astonished.

"Things like that just don't happen out here, its an uneasy feeling," said Union Grove resident, Jana Goza. Sheriffs deputies say 62-year-old James Evans was killed early Tuesday at his north Point Pleasant Road home.

"He met with a violent death and there is signs of a forced entry at the residence," said Upshur County Sheriff Anthony Betterton.

Evans lived in a remote location and the only thing missing is his truck. What is baffling investigators is determining a motive. They say Evans had no enemies-- he was well liked and lived a quiet life.

"It's an uncalled for crime, I mean, there's no reason why they would go in and do this to this man that's worked all his life," said the sheriff.

His death has frightened a community where everyone knows each other and leaves their doors unlocked.

"You want to watch your kids and whoever comes around that's different, that's not normally out here," says Goza.

"The key to the investigation is the truck, we really need to find the truck," Betterton says.

Investigators are asking the public to watch for a white 2002 Ford F-150 extended cab, Texas License 6RY-Y66.
