Mayor: Several Hours Crucial For Dam

Taunton, Massachusetts, Mayor Robert Nunes told reporters this morning the next several hours would be crucial, as a deteriorated dam threatened to send up to six feet of water into the city's downtown.

Taunton, a city of more than 56,000 people, about 30 miles south of Boston, has been protected from the Mill river for 173 years by the Whittenton pond dam.

Now, after a week of heavy rains, the timber dam is failing. About two-thousand Taunton residents have been strongly advised to evacuate. Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, in Taunton for the crisis, said the National Guard and state police are on standby to help if the dam bursts.
