First Food Deliveries To Reach South Asia Quake Victims Later Today

High-energy biscuits that will feed up to 240-thousand survivors of Saturday's earthquake in Pakistan should arrive later today.

That's the word from officials with the United Nations World Food Program.

A W-F-P spokesman says many people need ready-to-eat food because they lost all their food and their stoves in the quake.

The quake flattened entire villages and cut off whole regions, leaving up to 40-thousand people dead.

Water and sanitation systems also were severely damaged. The U-N health agency is warning of a possible measles epidemic and the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera and diarrhea.

The W-H-O is gathering the necessary vaccines for a mass immunization program.
