A Man Accused Of Attempting To Sexually Assault A Women Is In Custody

The man accused of breaking into a Tyler apartment Saturday, attempting to sexually assault a woman is now in custody. Authorities say it's not the first time he's done this sort of thing.

47-year-old John Richard Godfrey was arrested last night at the Rose City Motel in Tyler. Police say Godfrey is a registered sex offender in Tyler. Last Saturday, police say Godfrey broke a woman's window at the Barclay Apartments, got inside and attempted to sexually assault her at knife point. Police say the victim started screaming and kicking, alerting her roommate who came to her help her. Eventually, the suspect ran out the door. Police say he left behind pornographic magazines and a cooler full of beer. They identified Godfrey from a fingerprint found on one of those magazines.

"Apparently, he didn't get what he was there for and she resisted," said Officer Don Martin, Tyler Police Department. "She brought attention to him, which a criminal doesn't want attention by screaming, yelling, kicking and fighting. People are going to hear that and they are going to call the police and hopefully if we're there in time, we will catch the person."

Godfrey faces first degree felony charges of burglary with intent to commit aggravated assault. Police say fighting back worked in this situation, but every situation is different. The victim's roommate, who did not want to be identified, said she did not believe she had ever seen Godfrey, but believes he had been watching her.
