East Texan Facing Federal Charges For Claiming To Be Katrina Victim

Our KLTV 7 investigation first broke the story of alias Ray Johnson. He was arrested last Tuesday by Smith County Sheriff's Deputies, later admitting his real name and the reality that losing his family in the hurricane was all a lie. Now two federal indictments have been issued against Walter Stall. Prosecutors say Stall devised a scheme to defraud FEMA by claiming he was a New Orleans resident and entitled to relief because of damage to his residence, personal property and vehicle. None of which, prosecutors say, was true. A second count on the indictment alleges Stall also submitted a false claim to FEMA to receive at least $2,000 in disaster assistance. Johnson admitted to KLTV 7 in an on-camera interview that he received money, shelter and other supplies from local East Texans. Actions that prosecutors call "unconscionable, that someone would attempt to take advantage of the suffering of thousands to his own benefit."
