President Addresses Several Topics At News Conference

One day after naming his White House counsel to the Supreme Court, President Bush went before reporters at a White House news conference. President Bush strongly defended Harriet Miers as the right person for the job.

In his first full fledged news conference since May, President Bush addressed a wide range of topics from the growing conservative uproar over his latest Supreme Court nomination, White House counsel Harriet Miers.

President Bush said,"She's qualfied, she shares my philosophy."

President Bush said there's no litmus test, and refused to answer questions about her views on abortion; he also defended their friendship.

"I picked the best person I could find." President Bush said, "Yes we're close."

The President also commented on another friend, former House Majority Leader Tom Delay and the pair of money laundering indictments brought against him. He also spoke about the serious health concerns over the deadly Avian flu, and it's potential to come to America.

"I'm not predicting an outbreak, but we have plan in place," President Bush said.

He said he's considering using the military if necessary to quarantine part of the country in the event the epidemic does spread to the United States.

Bush who has seen his approval ratings plunge in polls over the past few months, pulled down by continued violence in Iraq and said America must stay the course, but he did not give a timeline.

The President again took responsibility for the mistakes made in the days after hurricane Katrina and vowed to do better. He also proposed expanding and building new refineries to ease the price of gas.
