CAPITOL HILL Congressman Tom DeLay is stepping aside as House majority leader, at least temporarily. He was indicted yesterday by a Texas grand jury on a charge of conspiring to violate political fund-raising laws.DeLay says he's done nothing wrong and denounces the Democratic prosecutor who pursued the case as a "partisan fanatic." DeLay also charges it is -- quote -- "one of the weakest, most baseless indictments in American history."DeLay is specifically charged with conspiring to launder Texas campaign money through the Republican National Committee and is the highest ranking member of Congress to face criminal prosecution.House Republicans have expressed support for him. And they've chosen the next man in line, Roy Blunt of Missouri, to take over as majority leader until the case against DeLay is settled. Copyright 2005 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
