Nearly 60 shots fired in Longview shooting that left 1 dead, 1 injured

Police investigate Longview shooting

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - East Texas police are seeking information on exactly what happened minutes before a barrage of shots were fired, wounding one man and killing another.

The shooting happened Thursday around 3:45 in the 200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Longview. Witnesses in a nearby barber shop say they heard numerous shots outside, and ran into the back of the shop for cover.

They said that one of the people who had been shot then came into the shop asking for help, and that's when 911 was called.

"At that location, two people were wounded, one subsequently died as result of his injuries," said Longview police officer Kristie Brian.

An eighteen-year-old man was hurt but is recovering. 29-year-old Lee Brightman Jr. died due to his injuries.

Because of the sheer number of shots, nearly 60, investigators are looking into how many people may have fired the shots, and how many weapons may have been involved.

"We're looking for the other people that may have been involved, what their role was in this shooting," Brian says.

UPDATE: One victim dead in Longview shooting on MLK Boulevard

Justice of the Peace B.H. Jamison was called in to pronounce the death.

"I heard one of them was hit multiple times. What we don't know is was it justifiable whatever, I don't know at this time; we're still investigating," Jamison says.

Connected to it was a police presence at Good Shepherd Hospital.

"Anytime you have a multiple shooting situation like this with victims, they pretty much lockdown the hospital. They don't know who is in involved, who is the victim, who is the perpetrator. You don't know who's walking in that may be involved in it," says Jamison.

And of course, a motive is needed.

"Just finding out who else was there at the time of the shooting was going on, why it occurred, that's things we're looking into," Brian says.

An autopsy has been ordered in the case.

Anyone with information on any of the parties that may have been involved in the shooting is asked to call Longview police.
