SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Deputies with the Smith County Sheriff's Office will soon have access to license plate recognition cameras.
On Tuesday morning, Smith Co. commissioners entered into an agreement with Vigilant Software. This comes after Sheriff Larry Smith says the department recently purchased three of the cameras. The idea is to scan all visible license plates to alert officers of any warrant or violation the car or car owner may have.
Several people voiced concerns about the software, saying it's a violation of personal rights. Commissioners requested an update on the cameras and their results in six months. No word on when they will officially go into use.
Sheriff Smith says the software is capable of facial recognition, but the county will not be using that feature. According to Smith, they don't have the proper hardware to do that.
