LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - In 1918, Woodrow Wilson was president, bathing suits were all the rage, and 'Mickey' was the top-grossing film. It was also the year Dave Fleming was born.
"It's surreal, I can't believe it, I can't believe I'm 100-years-old," Fleming said. "I take no credit for it, the good Lord above has charge of that."
Fleming was born in Cleveland, OH, on Sept. 3, 1918, and living 100 years is apparently easy, at least if you ask Fleming.
"My best advice is to keep having birthdays," Fleming laughed. "Keep having birthdays, that's my advice for longevity."
In all seriousness, Fleming said he couldn't take credit for his long life ("the good Lord above has charge of that," he said) but he added that there was something he does that contributes to how well he feels: tai chi and weight machines. He's been a regular to the CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Institute for Healthy Living for the past 10 years.
"I have a regular schedule," Fleming said. "I come, I can't do a lot because I'm 100-years-old, but I work out on the machines and do as much as I can."
And that's where a group of staff members and friends surprised him on Wednesday with a special party to mark his century milestone. There were no workouts scheduled on Wednesday; instead, tables covered in colorful cloth, party hats, and a birthday cake with 3 numbers few people are fortunate enough to live to see: 1-0-0.
"I'm blessed, I feel blessed, and I'm thankful for it all, and I'm overwhelmed by it all," Fleming said.
He added that he recently drove in from Austin from another birthday party held by 85 members of his close friends and family.
"It's a great time for me, and won't soon be forgotten," he added.
