DPS: 1 dead, 1 critically injured in Gregg County wreck

GREGG COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A single-vehicle accident in Gregg County left one person dead and one person critically injured Tuesday.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, troopers responded to a one vehicle fatal crash on US-259 in Gregg County, five miles north of the city of Longview just before 3 p.m. Tuesday.

They said preliminary crash investigation revealed that the driver of a 2013 Chevrolet Impala, Taneithia Roshekia Scott, 35, of Idabel OK, was driving south on US-259 near the 272 mile post in the right hand lane.

DPS said that Scott failed to drive in a single lane, and drove off the roadway into a ditch on the west side of the road.

They then said the vehicle continued through the ditch and struck a concrete culvert and vaulted into the air.

DPS said when the vehicle came down it began to roll multiple times, ejecting the driver and the passenger, John Alfred Smith, 49, of Idabel OK, who were unsecured.

The car came to rest on the driver's side facing northeast.

DPS said both of the occupants were transported by the Longview Fire Department to Longview Regional Hospital.

The driver succumbed to her injuries at the hospital while the passenger remains in critical condition.

DPS said the crash is still under investigation.
