CHEROKEE COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - A car crash resulted in one death in Cherokee County Friday morning.
At about 6:30 a.m., troopers with the Department of Public Safety responded to a fatal one-vehicle crash on County Road 4228, 4 miles northwest of the city of New Summerfield.
According to DPS's preliminary crash investigation, a 1996 Ford Ranger traveling south on CR 4228 approached a curve in the roadway at an unsafe speed. The vehicle failed to negotiate the curve, causing the truck to enter a side skid and leave the roadway. DPS reports the vehicle traveled into the west ditch, struck a fence and overturned, coming to a rest upside down facing north.
The driver of the truck, identified as 19-year-old Gavin Ray Taylor of Troup, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was transported to Autry Funeral Home in Jacksonville. A 17-year-old male passenger was injured in the crash and taken to a Christus Trinity Mother Francis Hospital- Jacksonville in a stable condition, according to DPS.
DPS reported Taylor was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
