Airport director explains mysterious sound in Longview sky Tuesday

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - What was that?! Many people in Longview found themselves asking that same question Tuesday night after a mysterious aircraft flew overhead and shook the city up.

UFO? Extremely noisy weather balloon? A secret military project? Close. Well, close on the third option; the aircraft was from the military, but Roy Miller, the director of East Texas Regional Airport, said there was a simpler explanation.

"It was the Air Force doing a training flight in an AWACS, the military's version of a 707," Miller said. "It's got radar and navigation equipment in it so they can do command and control. We have approach missions here, and they were doing night missions practicing their approaches."

So why so noisy? Miller has an answer for that, too.

"Military aircraft don't have the same noise-suppression requirements that civilian aircraft do, but the 707's a 4-engine jet, so it makes some noise," Miller added.

Mystery solved.
