Pet Evacuees Fill Up Animal Shelters

People are not the only ones evacuating from Southeast Texas. So are pets.

Owners who are staying at a place that does not allow animals have found shelter for their furry friends in East Texas veterinary clinics and boarding facilities.

A number of those pet shelters are already full, like the Tyler Veterinary Center.

"I know a lot of the other places in town -- boarding facilities, the ones we refer our overflow to -- are even full with dogs and cats," Dr. Sharon Phillips, a veterinarian at the center, said. "It's a lot more than when Katrina came through. We're taking a lot more calls, a lot more people evacuating here."

Tyler Veterinary Center says they've also been taking appointments for evacuee pets to get treatment and medicine.
