TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Smith County Commissioners approved a life-saving donation to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday morning. Sheriff Larry Smith says his department will soon receive 25 tourniquets and cases for deputies to carry.

The donation was made by Shawn and Alycia Gonter of Tyler. Smith says Shawn felt the need to donate after his own life was saved by someone with a tourniquet.

“He and his wife just felt led to donate and more so to get the word out that tourniquets need to be available,” Smith said.

According to Smith, his deputies are often first responders with so much rural area to cover. He says that even if the tourniquets save one life, it’s more than worth it.

“Minutes count and if you can’t stop the blood flow you’re not going to last until you get to the hospital,” Smith said.
