Lindale church hosts back to school supply carnival

LINDALE, TX (KLTV) - The start of school is just around the corner and many parents have already begun back to school shopping.

However, there are many families across East Texas who don't have the resources they need to provide their children with school supplies.

That's why dozens of kids were lined up outside the First United Methodist Church in Lindale, ready to get some school supplies. Their parents thankful for the church's generosity.

"It's very awesome, you don't see that often from the community so it's really nice of them to do that," parent Elizabeth James said.

After seeing a need in the community, the church decided to help.

"There's lots of families that just need that extra help here," church pastor Michael Peschke said. "And so, this was one way we could reach out and show them the love of god and show them what it means to be a community in the process."

However, to get their new school supplies, the kiddos had to show off their skills in various activities.

"Rather than just passing out the school supplies and having them walk through we can just play games and get to know each other and build some relationships with people in the community," church family and youth coordinator Kim Johnson said.

Between mini golf, balloon pop, a game of toss and much more, kids walked away with a bag full of goodies.

"I got some glasses, we got some headphones, and highlighters, we got some paper and colors and markers," Skylin Shelton said.

But the church wanted to do more, so they teamed up with the non-profit organization Laces of Grace.

"They donated 400 pairs of shoes and our church donated another 100," Johnson said.

Every child who walked through the door received a ticket, and if they needed new shoes, there were a variety of sizes and styles to choose from.

Kids also received a voucher that can be redeemed at the church's thrift store for a free back to school outfit.

"We have just a lot of fun things to do to make going back to school a little bit less stressful," Johnson said.

The church is donating any extra school supplies to the Lindale library who is hosting their own event on Aug 18th from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.

They will be giving out backpacks with school supplies, and jeans. They will be available in all sizes, but supplies are limited.
