A Longview family is mourning the loss of one of their three dogs that were shot and later euthanized due to its injuries.
The animal was shot around 4 p.m. Monday near its home in the 1200 block of Cole St., according to Lt. Shane McCarter with the Longview Police Department. The dog's owner said the pit bull had somehow gotten out of the backyard prior to the shooting.
The family talked about the events leading up to the dog's death but would not go on camera. They said they watched as a vehicle pulled up beside the dog, a man got out, pulled out a handgun and shot the dog twice. The shooter then got back in the car and it drove away.
A neighbor said she saw the dog lying in the street as animal control arrived to pick up the animal. Due to a decision made by a private veterinarian and the dog's owner, it was later euthanized due to its injuries.
The owner's son, who saw the shooting, said he's afraid to go outside after witnessing the seemingly random act of violence. The family said their pet was still a puppy, and only had the dog for about a year before its death.
McCarter said a suspect has been identified, but there have been no arrests in the case. Discharging a firearm within city limits is a crime, and if arrested, the suspect would also face a charge of cruelty to a nonlivestock animal.
