Smith County brush fire under control, firefighters say

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Several fire departments responded to a fairly large brush fire Wednesday evening.

Smith County Fire Marshal Connie Wasson says that the fire consumed between 15 to 17 acres.

It was brought under control by 6:45.

Wasson tells KLTV, the cause of the fire is undetermined.

The owner of the property was clearing brush, and when he turned around, he noticed the fire.

She says, he tried to put the fire out with a tractor, but the wind got to it and it started to spread.

Wasson says,  it could have easily been from a cigarette thrown from a passing vehicle as well.

No structures were damaged and no one was hurt.

At one point,  Arp Fire Department's David Gerald said at least one home was threatened, but fire engines were positioned in front of it to help keep the fire back from the house.
