Tyler pro-school-name-change group asks for mediation with opposition groups

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

The group in favor of changing the name of Robert E. Lee High School in Tyler released a statement on Monday, asking for mediation to take place to help groups on both sides of the issue "reach mutual understanding, or at least commit to civil engagement in the public square."

From Better Name, Better School, Better Tyler:

In the spirit of understanding, and at the urging of the Tyler ISD school board as well as an editorial by Patrick Stacey of KLTV 7, we have politely and generously reached out to opposition groups resisting the name change of Robert E Lee high school.

We had hoped for meetings so that we could arrive at a better comprehension of the reasonings behind both sides on this issue. namely why do many POC seek to right a past injustice and seek a better name for a new high school being built and why does Save Our Name/REL & Tyler United vigorously oppose such a change.

Our invitations have been received but gone answered. Our requests have been rebuffed on three separate occasions.

Since we cannot come together we humbly request a neutral third-party arbitrator to invite us both to the table for joint talks in order to arrive at a mutual understanding.

One suggestion would be a forum like Tyler Together’s “Tyler Talking Together” group sessions.

After such an arbitration if we cannot arrive at a mutual understanding we can at least commit to civil engagement in the public square and in online forums, both public & private.

Please feel free to contact us through email / messaging and or phone to help provide an arbitrated meeting.

Sincerely,

DG Montalvo

The train collided with a car on Stephens road east of Hallsville, catching fire. It was an unlikely source that investigators say brought the Amtrak train with 145 passengers on board to a stop. "A vehicle was being towed over the tracks. The tow strap broke as luck would have it, the vehicle stopped right in the middle of the trac...
