Chairman Named To Jail Site Selection Committee

The Smith County Jail Site Selection Committee now has a chairman. Smith County Commissioners today named one of their own, Commissioner David Stein, to lead the search for a site for a new county jail.

The court also added a new member to the committee. Jeff Warr, who lives in Flint, will be the only committee member who lives outside the city of Tyler. Judge Becky Dempsey says she got a number of phone calls from people who wanted someone from outside the city limits on the committee. "While Tyler is the biggest city in the county, the lion's share of our population is outside the city limits so it's important that we appoint another member," said Dempsey.

There are now seven members in the committee. Among them, Sheriff J.B. Smith, a Tyler Chamber leader and a realtor.
