Hurricane Relief Effort Raises $75,000

East Texas shoppers were treated to an unprecedented event to benefit the Hurricane Katrina disaster relief fund today in Longview. The Junior League of Longview in partnership with Neiman Marcus held a cash only public sale on Tyler Street. All proceeds from the sale go to benefit the local Katrina disaster victims. Neiman Marcus donated all of the furniture, housewares, clothing and jewelry, and many took the opportunity to get a deal and help the cause.

The effort meant much more to others. "I really kind of feel like I'm an ambassador for New Orleans being here in Longview being taken into this community and when I go home being able to talk about how wonderful Longview has been to us," says Kim Koster, a New Orleans evacuee. "It's amazing the volunteers are amazing people that are coming to shop are amazing and it just makes you feel really really good," Tammy Skinner, a Junior League volunteer.

Event organizers say that more than 2,200 shoppers turned out for today's sale, and that they took in more than $75,000 for the relief effort. All of the money goes to aid local Katrina victims.
