Roadwork in East Texas for the week of July 9

TYLER – Here's a look at work planned in the district during the Week of July 9, 2018. Schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, equipment failure or other unforeseen issues. Slow down and pay attention when traveling through work zones.

Motorists should prepare for a slow-down on I-20 next week when the eastbound inside lane will be closed for approximately three days near the Van Zandt/Kaufman County line for work on an ongoing safety project. The lane closure is set for 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, Monday thru Wednesday. Get more project information in the Van Zandt County section of this release.

In Tyler, daily lane closures are again being implemented on the Spur 248 widening project. The contractor will be conducting seal coat and paving operations which will cause brief delays for traffic. Additional project information is available in the Smith County section of this release.

Summer seal coat operations continue in the Tyler District. Motorists should expect lane closures and delays during this work to seal and protect roadways from water, and provide a longer life cycle. Because the time to complete work on each roadway is estimated, these schedules are subject to change.

Upcoming work is as follows in Gregg and Wood counties:

-        Friday, July 6: FM 1795 from FM 14 in Hawkins to the Upshur County line

-        Sat. – Wed., July 7-11: US 80 in Wood County from FM 778 east to the Upshur County line

-        Thursday, July 12: Loop 485 in Gladewater

-        Fri., Sat. - July 13-14: SH 42 from US 80 going south to Sinclair Road, one mile north of I-20

Anderson County – Crews plan to conduct edge repairs on FM 315 from SH 155 to FM 837. Expect lane closures with flaggers and a pilot car managing traffic control.

Anderson County construction projects updates:

US 79 New Lane Construction Project

The contractor is performing closeout activities on this job. The project is expanding a 5.3-mile section of US 79 from two lanes to a four-lane divided highway with a continuous left-turn lane and a depressed median.

SH 19 Widening Project

The contractor is preparing for the start of hot mix paving operations. Expect lanes closures daily and watch for turning truck traffic. The project is widening the roadway with the addition of shoulders and passing lanes. The posted speed limit is 55 mph.

US 79 at UPRR Overpass Project

The southbound right shoulder is closed for placement of concrete traffic barriers across the bridge to facilitate work on the bridge rail and Metal Beam Guard Fence. The work will eliminate the southbound shoulder. The speed limit has been reduced to 60 mph. The project includes, cleaning and painting steel girders, bridge rail replacement, and a concrete overlay of the existing bridge deck.

Cherokee County  Crews plan to perform pavement texturing on FM 235 between SH 110 and FM 2274, on SH 204 between Jacksonville and the Nacogdoches County line, and on FM 747 between US 79 and CR 3111. Expect lane closures with flaggers providing traffic control.

Cherokee County construction projects updates:

US 69 Widening through Wells

Earth work and structure work continue on the west side of the roadway. The project is widening US 69 through Wells from two lanes to four lanes with new curb and gutter and a two-way left turn lane through town. There are minimal impacts on traffic. The speed limit has been reduced on the northern end of the project until work is completed.

Gregg County – Crews plan to conduct work on FM 2275 at the intersection of Airline County Road. Most of the work will be off the roadway. Lane closures are possible with flaggers managing traffic control.

SH 300/Gilmer Road Overlay

Alternating nighttime lane closures can be expected Sunday through Thursday nights. Work will be conducted from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., starting Sunday. The project includes placing a hot mix overlay and installing new pavement markings on the roadway from US 80 to FM 2275/George Richey Road.

I-20 Eastbound Lanes Overlay

SH 135 Kilgore Overlay

The project is in Phase II construction with one lane only for southbound traffic throughout the project limits. Bridge rail work is being conducted on the west side of the road on this project to overlay SH 135 from just north of the Kilgore Circle to just north of SH 31 intersection. Motorists should expect delays. Work includes hot mix overlay, new pavement markings, new bridge rail and new Metal Beam Guard Fence.

US 80 Widening in Gladewater

Phase II construction continues with the roadway reduced to one lane of travel for both westbound and eastbound traffic. Work continues on storm sewer, curb and gutter, and flex-base on the north side of the roadway. The project consists of widening US 80 to four through lanes with a left turn lane from Loop 485 to Locker Plant Road.

Loop 281 at FM 1845/Pine Tree Road

Expect single lane closures as the contractor conducts work on this project. Traffic has been opened to its final lane configuration in each direction. The project includes widening the roadway, installing storm drain, grading and base work, curb and gutter, raised medians, surface, signs and pavement markings.

SH 149 at Sabine River

•        Limits: From SH 322 to approximately one half-mile north of the Sabine River Bridge

•       Contractor: Gibson and Associates

•       Cost: $3.1 million

•       Anticipated Completion Date: Summer 2018

Traffic has been returned to normal configuration with two lanes flowing in each direction. Expect alternating lane closures daily as the contractor continues work on the project. The project includes constructing new rails and sidewalk on the bridge, increasing its load carrying capacity, and installing new guardrail on I-20.

Henderson County – Crews plan to conduct base repairs on FM 1803, surface work on BU 31W, and edge repairs on FM 314. Expect lane closures with flaggers providing traffic control at all locations.

Henderson County construction projects updates:

SH 31 Overlay Project

Mill and inlay operations are underway necessitating daily lane closures. The project consists of base repairs, mill and inlay, seal coating, surface hot mix, Metal Beam Guard Fence upgrades, and the installation of signs and pavement markings.

Striping Operations

The contractor is removing old striping and short line and working to replace stop bars and cross walks on this project in the Gun Barrel City area. The work includes water blast removal of the old thermos-striping, buttons and short line (stop bars, yield bars, arrows, wordage, etc.). Once the old striping is removed, the roadways will be restriped with paint first, then with thermo-stripe. The installation of new buttons and short line will follow. Signage notifying motorists of this project have been installed along the project limits and various other locations.

SH 19 Widening Project

Work continues on the northbound side of the roadway including stripping topsoil and dirt work to add the shoulders. Expect daily lane closures. The speed limit has been reduced to 60 mph for the duration of the project which consists of adding 10-foot shoulders on both the northbound and southbound travel lanes. 

US 175 Widening Project (Phase I)

Hot mix paving operations continue on the westbound lanes from Baxter to one mile east of Larue. Caution is advised as trucks enter and exit the work zone. Construction to realign Loop 60 at the intersection of US 175 in Larue continues. Work is ongoing on the new westbound mainlanes from CR 4720 to CR 4719 in Larue. Construction of new culverts continues along the old roadway (proposed westbound lanes) between Baxter and Larue. The speed limit is 55 mph on this project to expand US 175 from two lanes to a four-lane divided highway with a depressed median.

US 175 Widening Project (Phase II)

Eastbound traffic is open to a two-lane configuration. The easternmost access to FM 315 and Downtown Poynor is now open to traffic. Closeout activities are ongoing in various locations. 

This Phase II project is expanding US 175 from two lanes to a four-lane divided with a depressed median. The project limits stretch 4.7 miles ending just east of FM 315 in Poynor. The speed limit has been set at 60 mph. A portion of this phase is being built on new location around the south side of Poynor. This is a mobility project to add capacity and improve safety and includes adding one lane in each direction.

US 175 Widening Project (Phase III) in Anderson County

Traffic is on the westbound lanes as work is conducted in the eastbound lanes. The contractor continues work in the two southern most lanes from Elm St. to Cemetery Road in preparation for storm-water and culvert installation by milling down the existing road in the culvert locations. Clearing and grubbing are ongoing for culvert installation and storm-water on the south side of the roadway. Excavation and embankment work continue in several culvert locations throughout the project limits with box culvert sections being received and installed. The project is expanding US 175 from two lanes to a four-lane divided highway with a depressed median.  

Rusk County – Crews plan to continue edge maintenance on FM 850 from US 259 to SH 42. Expect lane closures with flaggers and a pilot car providing traffic control.

Smith County – Maintenance and Special Crews plan to implement seal coat operations at several locations. On Tuesday, work will be conducted on SH 110 from just south of the light at FM 346 to Hagen Road at the Speed Pantry. Work will then move to SH 110 in Troup starting on the north side of town at Sonic moving south to just past the Four Way Stop. By Friday, the work moves to SH 135 starting at the Four Way Stop heading north to SH 64. Work includes sealing the interchanges and approaches on each side of the bridge. Work will also be conducted on Spur 80. Expect lane closures with flaggers providing traffic control.

Smith County construction projects updates:

US 69 Resurfacing Project

CR 356 & CR 234 Bridge Replacement Project

Bridge substructure work continues with both roadways closed and traffic detoured. The project is replacing the existing bridges with wider ones. 

FM 346 Bridge Replacement Project

The contractor is performing earthwork operations on the bridge approaches. The speed limit through the work zone has been reduced to 45 mph. The project is replacing the existing bridge with a wider one.

Legacy Trails – Hike and Bike Trail Development

Sidewalk construction continues on the West Trail from Three Lakes Parkway to FM 2813. Sidewalk construction also continues along the Oncor easement between Dueling Oaks and Cumberland Rd. No lane closures are planned. The project consists of constructing 4.4 miles of hike and bike trails in Southwest Tyler. It includes the construction of parking lots, driveways, landscaping, pedestrian ramps, crosswalks and drainage structures along the 10-foot wide hike and bike trails.

FM 849 Bridge Replacement Project

No lane closures are planned.This is an emergency bridge replacement project consisting of removing the existing steel and concrete structure and replacing it with a new 4-span reinforced concrete structure. Work also includes the widening of the bridge approaches and improvements to the I-20 ramps.

FM 850 Bridge Replacement Project

Spur 248 Widening Project

Expect daily lane closures as the contractor conducts seal coat and paving operations. Embankment, subgrade, drainage and retaining wall work are ongoing on the north side of the roadway. The speed limit is 55 mph during construction to widen Spur 248 from two lanes to a four-lane divided roadway with a flush median.

Turn Lanes Project

Work continues to construct right turn lanes on Broadway Avenue and South Town Drive. No lane closures are planned. Daily lane closures, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., can be expected at Grande Boulevard and Old Jacksonville Highway during work to build a right turn lane. The project is removing the existing medians to extend the turn lanes and adding right turn lanes to various intersections in Tyler. Work locations include US 69, Cumberland Road, Independence, South Donnybrook, Rice, South Town and wrap up at Grande and FM 2493.

Van Zandt County – Crews plan to address drainage issues around the county. Lane closures are possible.

Van Zandt County construction projects updates:

FM 16 at FM 314 Intersection Improvements (New Project)

This project consists of the replacement of three county road bridges in Van Zandt County. The CR 1903 Bridge at Mill Creek Relief is closed for the duration of construction.

I-20 Westbound Exit Ramp at FM 314 Relocation Project

The new frontage road and WB Exit Ramp are in place and open to traffic. The contractor is conducting final cleanup activities on this project that consists of reconstructing the frontage road and building a newexit ramp 1.13 miles east of FM 314.

I-20 Safety Work

The inside lane of I-20 will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday – Wednesday near the Van Zandt/Kaufman County line. The contractor is removing and installing Metal Beam Guard Fence and concrete mow strip along the I-20 mainlanes and frontage roads in Van Zandt County. Flaggers will provide traffic control.

FM 314 Widening Project

Structure, road widening, and driveway work, is ongoing on the north side of the road. Minor delays can be expected. The project is widening the roadway from two to four lanes with a flush median, curb and gutter, and storm drain.

FM 1256 Widening Project

FM 1652 Rehab Project

Rehabilitation and widening work is being conducted on a two-mile section on the south end of the roadway. Driveway and cross structure work is ongoing on this rehab project that is widening the existing roadway and includes structure work. Expect lane closures with flaggers providing traffic control.

FM 1653 Rehab Project

Road base preparation is underway on this project that consists of rehabbing and widening the roadway. Expect lane closures and delays with flaggers providing traffic control.

FM 1861 Rehab Project

A temporary traffic signal, in conjunction with a pilot car, is providing traffic control on this project that consists of rehabilitating and widening the existing roadway. Expect delays!

County Road 1825 Bridge Replacement Project

Wood County – Crews plan to conduct work on the shoulders of FM 1254. Expect lane closures with flaggers providing traffic control.
