KILGORE, TX (KLTV) -

Police say a man died Sunday evening when he was struck by a train in Kilgore.

The man was struck while crossing over the tracks near Kilgore High School, according to the Kilgore Police Department. The man was not crossing at the crosswalk.

Union Pacific released a statement on the incident, saying the collision remains under investigation.

"Around 5 p.m. this evening, an eastbound Union Pacific train struck a person on the tracks near Southport Road. The person was pronounced dead at the scene. The train crew was not injured, and nothing was spilled from the train. Union Pacific is working with local authorities to investigate what led up to the incident," the company said.

Director of Media Relations for Union Pacific says the safety message here is that pedestrians, and everyone, need to be very aware of the hazards associated with trains and should never be on the train tracks or attempt to cross anywhere other than a designated crossing when signs and signals permit.

"Our hearts go out to friends and family of the deceased," he said. "Our locomotive engineer and conductor were immediately put in touch with peer counselors who are also locomotive engineers and conductors as part of our "Peer Support" program."

The man's identity has not been released at this time.
