There are now just two shelters in Tyler, housing Gulf Coast evacuees. Today, the UT Patriot Center shelter closed. Monday, the shelter at Marvin United Methodist Church closed. The Red Cross says evacuees are finding permanent housing arrangements. The number of evacuees now staying in Tyler hotels and motels is estimated at 600.
Also, there has been a system put in place for evacuees looking to receive a driver's license or identification card. TX-DOT is offering a free temporary identification card that will be valid only until January 1st. If you're interested, you will have to drive out of town. The IDs are only available at DPS locations in Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio and Austin.
DPS hopes to expand the program to other cities, once the equipment becomes available.
