The Lufkin Majors All-Stars won on Thursday night despite having their backs against the wall.
The team went into the elimination game against Rose Capital West with two players missing from the team. Angel Rios had a broken finger. Russell Reid was out with a more serious injury. In the game Tuesday night, Reid was struck in the head by a wild pitch.
According to Manager Bud Maddux, Reid had multiple broken bones in his face near the eye and is dealing with blurry vision out of one of hie eyes. Reid was able to attend the game and sit in the dugout but he is done for the tournament. After the starting lineups were announced both teams gathered at the pitcher's mound and said a prayer for the Reid family.
They also went in with one loss meaning if they lost tonight, the the summer experience of All-Stars was over for the group.
Once the game started, Lufkin came out as a different team. Cole Standley would get three strikeouts in four batters to end the first inning of defense for Lufkin. In the bottom of the first, Diesel Gonzalez would get a grand slam over the centerfield fence to give Lufkin a 4-0 lead after one inning.
Lufkin would add four more in the second inning. West would not find the scoreboard until the fifth inning. In the same inning Lufkin would get their final two runs.
In the sixth inning, West would get two runs as well but the damage had been done and Lufkin would get the win to eliminate West.
The win sets up a rematch of the round 2 game between Lufkin and the Pineywoods All-Stars. Pineywoods beat Lufkin 14-6 on Tuesday night at Morris Frank Park. This time the game will be at Faulkner Park in Tyler on Saturday June 23. If Lufkin wins a final tournament game will take place on Tuesday June 26. The winner of that game would be the District Champions. If Pineywoods can get a second win over Lufkin on Saturday then Pineywoods would be the District 10 Champions and would move onto the Section 1 Tournament in July.
