Nursing Home Owners Charged

One of many horrifying stories to emerge for the Hurricane Katrina disaster is that of Saint Rita's Nursing Home. 34 bodies were found there and investigators are trying to determine if the residents were abandoned.

Yesderday, Louisiana Attorney General Charles Foti, Jr. charged Mable and Salvador Mangano Sr., both 65, with 34 counts of negligent homicide. The Manganos, who face up to five years on each count, surrendered on Tuesday. The owners stayed in the nursing home through the storm with their children, grandchildren, and nieces, and nephews.

But their lawyer says the Manganos had to make a difficult decision between evacuating the patients, many of them elderly and on feeding tubes, or keeping them at the home and weathering the storm. He says the owners were there and saved 52 lives.
