NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

Stephen F. Austin State University's upcoming football season will be business as usual - that's the message newly named interim head football coach aimed to convey during a Wednesday press conference.

"What we're trying to do is business as usual," said Jeff Byrd. "We're going to go to work."

Byrd was named interim head coach Tuesday following the suspension of Coach Clint Conque. Conque was suspended pending an investigation into alleged violations of university policy.

That investigation is expected to take several weeks to complete.

When asked about the investigation Byrd responded, "What I know is what you reported."

Byrd was also asked how long the suspension is expected to last.

"I'm interim 'til they tell me I'm not interim," he said.

Byrd is in his second year with the Lumberjacks after serving as SFA's defensive coordinator during the 2017 season. He was promoted to assistant head coach in March.

"Kids love to play the game so they're going to play the game regardless," Byrd said."They asked me 'Will you take care of these players.' And that's what I'm gonna do."

The interim coach was also asked about the difficulty of stepping into the roll of head coach. He said it had been a bit of a transition to shift his focus from the defense but remained optimistic.

Conque is one of the winningest coaches in the Southland Conference ranking third all-time in Southland coaching victories, according to the university's website. He is in his fifth season as head coach.
