TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Funding was approved Wednesday morning for the Tyler Fire Department to complete its communications system on its mobile command trailer.
A grant was awarded to the department in 2017, but it wasn't enough to complete the project in the way Tyler Fire Chief David Coble wanted.
"We received a call in March, letting us know there were some additional funding there," Coble said. "So, they asked if we would want them fully-funded, and we said yes."
The communications system includes networking, radios, and gateways that would give the Tyler Fire Department to the ability to communicate anywhere in the state should they be called upon. Wednesday's additional funding would allow the fire department to finish out the command center with two more radios, a gateway, and a long-range acoustical device.
"We're part of Region 6 here in Tyler, so when we get the call, we would staff that vehicle and we would send them wherever," Coble said."That trailer did go down to assist in Hurricane relief with Harvey."
"If the incident involved highway patrol, local EMS, fire department, police department, we could patch through our command platform and allow all of them to speak to one another," Coble added.
In other words, Coble said its something of a mobile dispatch system for wherever the trailer goes. To work out the kinks ahead of any disaster situation, whether it be fire or weather-related, the fire department also uses the trailer for lighter events.
"We used the trailer during the Fresh 15, and will again at a Fourth of July event toward the end of the month," Coble said. "We use it during large events so we learn how to fix things during non-emergency cases so that when we go out to an emergency situation, we're prepared."
