SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas family recently experienced a fire that destroyed their home.
This past Monday, community members helped to put out the mobile home fire on Echo Glen Drive in Smith County.
"When I called my mom she said, 'Debbie, your house is burned down!' and I said, 'mom I'm hot, I'm tired, and your jokes aren't funny so just stop,' and she said, 'no baby, I'm serious, your house is gone," homeowner Debbie Ferguson said.
Ferguson said she was devastated when she heard her home of fifteen years had burned down.
"It was my life, it was our world," she said. "I had a place that was ours and I felt like I belonged, but now I don't."
Ferguson lived on the property with her boyfriend Allen Ferguson, neither of which were home at the time. Ferguson said she recently spoke with the Smith County fire marshal.
"Well, they did say that it wasn't [an] electrical fire," she said.
The question of how the fire started still unanswered.
The fire is still under investigation by the Smith County Fire Marshal's Office.
